On the Road
, Jack KerouacThis novel is about the traveling exploits of Sal Paradise (Jack Kerouac) and Dean Moriarity. Very entertaining, poorly disciplined, but enjoyable reading. Story is about Dean Moriarity and friendship from the beat generation perspective. Several memorable anecdotes - Moriarity, et al, speeding across the US in a brand new 1949 Hudson. Also a trip from Denver to Chicago to deliver a late 40s Caddy limousine. A nice little book, and obviously influential of such entertainment as the Blues Brothers movies - a premonition of the Wired life of John Belushi - but hardly literature. I seem to remember disillusioned reports from sources who stated that the stories in On the Road were fiction - and their resulting disappointment. Without the luxury of any independent authority on Kerouac's life - I suspect that the novel reflects JK's sweet natured and benevolent personality and love of life - coupled with a disdain for the material possessions of our mainstream society.
